Open a Restaurant in Today’s Business Climate ?
October 8th, 2008
The market is always there - there is always a hungry mouth to feed or is willing to pay for a meal. Still running a restaurant is hard work as well as lots of hours. It seems now that it is even tougher and harder as restaurateurs are feeling the pinch in their pocketbooks as a slowing economy and rising costs have bit in. Food prices for ingredients are way up - that is no secret to anyone who has recently shopped at any supermarket. Yet many restaurant customers resist price increases regarding any price hikes as unwarranted and unjustified. I paid this amount last year, it should not be any different or more. The other option is to reduce portions or levels or service. However in the long run or even the shorter run this could be downright disastrous for any restaurant. Once a reputation in the food service, or basically any business, it is next to impossible to restore.
The option for others is to open a franchise. By opening a franchise you are basically buying a reputation as well as proven system for running the shop , training and hiring staff. It can be argued that it better to have someone work out the bugs - do the homework and be able to purchase supplies in bulk. Yet you are stuck with some else’s ideas of how to run your own business and with what. More chance or surviving but will you ever prosper or in essence bought yourself a job with your hard earned capital.
