Delicate Situations in Job Interview Situations

Sunday, January 4th, 2009

There can be any number of what might be called “delicate”  or “indiscreet” situations in job interviews.

Preparation is important although obviously you cannot predict all situations that may occur.  Very good or not so good interviewers may have the skills of   perhaps a gestapo officer.

They may uncover initiators that you may not be the most comfortable with handling, or have never though of since and long forgotten or some issue or event that your purposely and consciously forgot or put behind you long ago.

Among the most standard or even common questions that may come up in the course of a standard job or employment interview or interviews include:

- You have periods of long unemployment in your work history or histories

- You went to college or university and did not earn or complete your degree or course of studies

- The three or four most recent jobs on in your work history bear little resemblance or relation to one anther or the job position’s that you are currently applying for

- None of the specific jobs described in your resume or cover letter are directly related to the position / positions to which you are applying for/

Action Letters that Respond to Needs

Thursday, January 1st, 2009

It can be best as well as easily said that generally job action letters fall into two categories:

1) Those that are reactive.  The action letter is a response to a specific need .  Letters in this group are written when you know that a job opening does exist.  These can be said to be “reactive” letters.

2) Proactive letters:  Proactive letters are letters that initiate leads.

Letters in the group of  “proactive letters”  are generally written to inquire about a possible or potential job opening.

A sub group of the proactive letter are “thank you” letters and other letters that a job applicant or other person are not required to write. but are initiated  as both a ways and means to follow up on a possible job opening or job employment openings.

Establish a Time Budget When it Comes to Internet Job Searches

Monday, December 15th, 2008

Similarly when conducting online job and employment searches on the internet - the world wide web- determine in advance how much time ( and energy) you can afford to spend or allocate each time period on Internet-related job or carear search activities. This can be set up as a monthly, weekly or even daily time duration or time span allotment.

Track your internet usage - per time periods.   make sure that you have the discipline to stay within your chosen time period allotments.  You have plenty to do when it comes to  your job employment searches.   You need time and energies devoted to other faucets of your searches - be it resume preparation , improving interview  skills, career networking and even time for physical meetings as well as job employment interviews.

It may all seem “free” as in most cases now Canadian and in this case Manitoba and Wpg internet providers be they Shaw cable or MTS internet allow for unlimited bandwidth and internet time use and usages.

However it is not free in terms of your time and energies spent.  You must leave time and energy devoted to oher fauctets of your job and carer searches.  Diversification of activivies and energies is a most importnt component of successful job employment  and career search campaigns.

Plan Your Sessions Ahead of Time

Monday, December 15th, 2008

It is always best and most preferable to plan your sessions ahead of time.  Decide ahead of time what specifically that you want to accomplish in each online session that you use and utilize for employment job hunting as well as career search purposes.  It cab be said that simply logging in with no clear job hunting related goals or goals is not unlike going into a supermarket shopping without a clear list.  You do not specifically what you want or how to judge your overall result or needs.  Sure you may end up with some things and some items , services or products obtained - but you might well fprget what you were there for in the first place.  With a full list for your shopping trio it is similar in that you can navigate your way around the whole facilities in a short time.  The internet may be fun and great - but it is vast , can be time consuming especially if you lack a clear cut plan and agenda in your online job search activities.

Date Lines as Well as “Inside Address”

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008

It can be best and easiest said to place the date two lines below your contact information and as well place the inside address two lines below the date.  Aligned with the left side of the page, enter the name of the person to whom you are writing.  ( with a Mr. Mister, Ms. , Madam , or Mrs. ) designation :  followed on the next line by the company name. then on the next lines the address.  It can be said and summarized that if you know exactly the correct title or position of the receiving end , then use it.  If you are not sure or mildly unsure then do not use it.  Nothing is sweeter to a person than their name and position.  If you have it wrong, it may never be said out loud to you or publicly .  However it will never a negative effect that it is lasting and is  almost guaranteed to ensure that you not not receive the job.

As for the correct placement and format of the receiver and title thereof then include that information on the same line as the receiver’s name or on the following line.

On the right side of the page. aligned with the inside address information you can then include a line labelled RE: to highlight the reason or specific reason for the correspondence.

Contact Information in Cover Letters

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008

The format of contact information as it pertains to “cover letters” and employment cover letters can be more than crucial.  By listing contact information in a proper manner not only does it leave it an excellent first impression but also shows and demonstrates that a potential employee can take direction and work as a member of a team.

What should be listed in the contact information of the cover letter ?  First your address, telephone number, email address and url of a webpage if you have one.  Such listed information  should appear first on your cover letter.  Addresses can be placed in the middle or on either side of the page or pages , alternatively.  Just make sure to that your web address is on a line of its very own , distinctly.

You may well find that you have a choice of where exactly to place your name.  Best is in large letters above your address or you can type it below your signature.  The only stipulation being that not to place your address in both places.  It is a waste and overkill as well as overemphasis.

You may note from time to time that “computer friendly”  cover letters often place the telephone number ,email address and website address on separate lines below your residential address for better scanning.  In addition you can also separate two items on the very same line of the page of your cover letter.

Strategies to Help Employ in Dealing with Employment and Skill Weaknesses

Monday, November 17th, 2008

Thus covered are some of the main as well as major strategies that can be employed by a job seeker or employment seekers that can be employed or “used” to help you field questions and survive potential damage that may reduce your chances of successful employment or even derail your chances of being awarded employment or even an interview at all.  It is often said that by interview screeners that there are two job piles and no shortage whatsoever for candidates for “good jobs”.  Pile one is those of interest - everyone else and any “troublemakers” or any spot on their characters or history , even as small as shoplifting , are immediately and even automatically placed in pile number 2 which is nothing more than the garbage or even unceremoniously a trash can.

Everything in life is sales, marketing and communication so to speak.  If the whole approach is done in an honest and sincere approach to gain employment and be a productive member of the company , firm or organization’s team this is not misrepresentation or even lying - it is putting the best food forward and in the process even demonstrating your skills, thoroughness , preparation and determination. All very positive traits that not only hard to come by for employers in people they hire but also rather rare.

Formulating Your Replies and Responses to Interview Questions

Monday, November 17th, 2008

When formulating your response and responses to interviews and interviewer’s questions some general guidelines and even rules to abide by are in order:

1) Choose shortcomings that are not severe or at least too severe in outcome and outcomes and that will prove least damaging to your potential candidacy as an employment or even interview process candidate

2) Pick those weaknesses that are the least-related to performance of key areas of your job or chosen area of performance  .  For example if you wish employment as an installation tech person it is best not to point out previous experiences as a b & e artist

3) Select areas where you have already demonstrated improvement, demonstrating your abject willingness as well as motivation and motivations to improve

4) Pick weaknesses , that if viewed differently may also be seen as good and even major strengths ( for example being too detailed could also be seen as being thorough and accurate - a very good trait for a computer repair person diagnostician or air traffic controller).  Similarly stubbornness could be seen as stick to it ness or persistence good in many traits.

5) Avoid stating your weaknesses in “absolute”  and rigid terms- although it is always a wise idea and even best to leave some doubt that by showing others may perceive it differently ( even as an asset or strength_  It is a management failing of many that they come with a basis of all or nothing approach to work and management - “I am the boss” and that you have to keep the troops down lest you be seen as weak.  After all it is pathologically reasoned - everyone is after my job.

Lastly if possible , qualify the weakness in context of your overall performance  that is state that although an area for improvement of slated for improvements has not had a significant impact on overall job performance measures.
