UncategorizedWhy do People Stay at Jobs That They do Not Enjoy
Friday, October 26th, 2007
You may have heard the old joke of the fellow who works for a circus but has a really terrible job. When asked why he stayed on and did not quit - his answer was that he liked “Show Business ” too much with all its excitement and challenges.
You do have a right in a North American society to do what you wish. However many people are stuck in jobs that they do not like or are below their capabilities for a number of reason. Chief of these if familiarity and lack of inertia.
Familiarity is a common theme. It is not even that the devil you know is better than the devil you don’t.
It may be that the grass is greener on the other side of the fence - but who knows the problems you will have cutting it .
Its not only a fear of change - most people actually do not like change. There is a certain comfort level in what you know. It may not be good but at least you know what it is , what it does and what the problems are.
While it is true that there may be well be more potential on the other side - but yet a whole host of new and potentially worse problems. What you have may not be the best - but it can be counted on.
It is often other factors as well that influence a comfort level. Many years ago a young man had a summer project concerning a proposed social service program of a guaranteed minimum income. Perhaps such a system will come into play in the future. Such a program would allow for workers to continually leave the workforce for training and return with new and more desirable or needed skills and training. The interesting thing is that this young man conducting the questionaires realized a certain fact of the workforce that was readily apparent to him. It seemed that most people disliked and even hated their jobs. It was not even the money or the steady income that kept them at their places of employments.
Rather is was the “people at work” who they enjoyed as friends and social companions that kept them from quitting their jobs and moving on to new employment opportunities.

After you have put together some sort of network list, your number one priority should be to let as many people know - and as soon as practically possible. As in life everything comes down to practical logistics.
The easiest way to accomplish your objective is using a targeted email and snail list. This will cover the waters so to speak. Be brief and to the point.
The problem you will have no doubt - is that many if not most people are overwhelmed with unwanted information and / or simple disturbances.
The easiest way is so send out the info once. Next follow through with phone calls. Note not to call at the worst times for any industry. For example in the signage business the worst possible times are - Monday , when reports of weekend emergencies have occurred and service needs to be promptly arranged and coordinated , and Fridays - when all the bars and restaurants are clambering for their product and for services for the peak weekend business periods.
Call during off peak times, just to verify that the information was received. In cases where you can notice that the firm is too busy to verify your request or even if your info passed through the email spam filters or the snail mail secretarial screening process. These productive firms are often the leaders in their market - both being the best and the most highly paid organizations that are often the best to work for.
Visit these places personally. You may have to make an appointment. Be professional and not a pest. Otherwise all your efforts will be counterproductive and if anything will not lead to employment and a possible career.

Looking for that Job

As an example say that you are scanning the classified job postings on the computer at the library (the finance company has retrieved their computer, or perhaps it was stolen). Your eye automatically stops at that one, then that one, and yet that one. Those are the hot listings for you, the other ones you follow up on first. Thus the others do not really count (it is an arbitrary choice on your end), without thinking of them you drop those ads. When you call the “hot job listings) this one is filled, or that one no longer exists, that one does not look good any more.
All in all it is not a fruitful exercise
Job Hunting as In life is Understanding and Playing by the Rules
Thursday, October 4th, 2007
There is one thing that is certain in this uncertain world. You may well be confused about job hunting. You may well be frustrated. You should have an insight and an understanding concerning the process of job hunting and seeking employment - on a regular basis not just as if you were serving time.
In getting jobs as in life there is no easy way. It is not a matter that you can be a big overbearing buffoon who intimidates people. It won’t last long and there you will be yet again. If you have not been winning , been a loser - it either means that you do not understand the rules or perhaps you are too dim witted to ever understand the rules. So goes life and thus so goes your life onwards.
