Choosing a Basic Resume Format
Saturday, January 12th, 2008
The most widely used resume format is a two-con format in which the left column is narrower than the right column and is used almost exclusively for either names of the dates of employment.
The advantages of the two column format is that it produces a cleaner , airier , tighter look that makes the resume easier to read. But there are disadvantages as well. Two-column formats can be tricky to work in certain word processing packages. If you have never worked in the two column format and you are not adept at the tab and identification commands, it can be more than difficult.
Another disadvantage of the two column format is that the extra space it creates on the page gives you a little less room to work with than the one column format does. Consequently you may have to use a smaller typeface or else add an additional page to your resume.
Your choice , in the end, comes down to what works best with you. If you can handle the formatting and you are not going to run into space problems. the two column format is the more attractive, more readable choice. Neither choice is likely to have any impact on whether or not someone reads the resume.

UncategorizedVerbal Communication Skills : Preparation for Team Presentations

1. Condense Your Main Message. Ideally you should get it down to a 30 second blurb. How do you do that? Start with the goal of your speech. Is it to convey knowledge? If so what is the main thrust? Perhaps your goal is to inspire your audience to take action. If so, what action do you want them to take Maybe your goal is to make your audience feel something. This is your overarching message. Write your first draft without attention to length at first. Once you’ve done that, and then condense it. When you deliver your speech, touch on it at least 3 times or whenever appropriate, but are sure to include it in the beginning, middle, and especially at the end.2. Have Three Main Points. Even if you need to cover many different ideas, try to categorize them into 3 main points that all tie back to your Main Message. Let your audience know you’ll be talking about those 3 main points in the beginning. This will help them to follow along, especially if you are not using visual aids. And keep in mind that this holds true regardless of the length of your speech.3. Include only the Most Powerful Data and Facts. Like preparing your main message, collect all the data you think you might want to include in your speech. Then go through it all and include only the data that helps you dramatically drive home your main message and your 3 main points. Less is more. If the data doesn’t pack a punch don’t include it.4. Visual Aids. Keep PowerPoint presentations as concise as possible. Use as few words as you can and whenever possible use pictures and graphics instead.5. Speech Outline Cue Cards. If you must use a prompt, use flash cards that only contain an outline of your speech with the main topics and facts. Reading from a script will sound like just that and will most likely not engage your audience.6. Practice. Show of hands: how many of you prefer to “wing it” when making a speech? Ok, you’re not alone. Now another show of hands: how many of you get up the podium and think “Oh crap, I should have practiced?” Yeah, ok, so you know where I’m headed with this. Practice. The goal is not to be able to deliver the exact words verbatim. The goal is to be able to memorize your outline, to sound natural, and feel relaxed while delivering your speech. Practice your speech at least 5 times with at least one of those times recording yourself. This will help you to edit your delivery.
7. Release the Nerves. Before giving your speech release some of your nervous energy and pump up your confidence with some physical body movements that show strength. Do some jumping jacks. Raise your arms high. Jog around the hallway listening to some music. Stop about 5 minutes before your speech to do one last brief review of your notes.
8. The Pep Talk. Before you go “on stage” give your self a pep talk. You could say something like: “I am going to deliver a powerful speech today. People will understand my powerful message and will be inspired to take action. And I am going to have fun doing this! I can’t wait!”
9. Smile and Have Fun. Make it a point to enjoy giving the speech. Have fun. What’s the worst that could happen? You could fall down, sneeze, get dry mouth, and have shallow breathing, and so on. Who cares? If it happens just keep smiling and if appropriate refer to it to produce an easy laugh for your audience. But then move on. Just like an ice skater in a competition, keep smiling no matter what and if you fall down, just get back up and keep going.
10. When You Can’t Smile. Ok, the exception to smiling and having fun is if you need to deliver a very serious or solemn message. If that’s the case, then cultivate the proper tone by taking a few moments before the speech to close your eyes and visualize how you want to sound and look. Visualization is a powerful form of practic

Plan Ahead, Practice and Prepare Potential Questions and Scenarios for Your Job Employment Interviews
Friday, January 11th, 2008
In terms of stressing the importance and vital nature preparation for the employment interview it should be more than noted that every politician in North America - be it in the U.S.A. or Winnipeg , Manitoba Canada prepares to a tee before each and every press conference as well as major function they attend - be it a local political , news event or a large conference , convention or Auto industry trade show. The same could be said of CEOs and executives of major firms - whether it be in the transport or automobile industry - be it General Motors (G.M.) , Chrysler, Ford , Nissan , Saburu or Toyota. These authorities in their fields and expertise plan and prepare well ahead of the event. Indeed they go as far as to memorize a set of answers to all of the relevant questions as well as those questions which may come up in the interview ,as well as questions and answer sections. Aides and assistants are asked to prepare and think ahead of any such questions and queries relevant , those not relevant and indeed rated and ranked as oddball.
Again you might think that running and planning by the seat of your pants is exciting , advantageous and indeed of great merit. It is all waste of time . It fools no one - except for those who are easily fooled . You would not want to work for these people at all as employers. Full of bravado . Strutting around ” I am a genius”. Indeed swaggering around repeating the mantra ” I am a genius”. The child in the sandbox who thinks that because that he is bigger than the other kids that he can push himself around in life and work by intimidation. A real success story ??? In the end all he or she will have in their lives is what they have taken , or stolen from others who they consider are weaker , or perhaps not as smart as “they are”. Its akin to the student who gets a high grade of 43 in an exam and then turns to the person behind them in line , who obtained a similar failing grade of 42 and announces proudly to that other student “I beat you”.
Similarly it can be said in the job employment interview game that you have to plan ahead and prepare. If you think that by answering the interview questions on the spot - in the fire of the interview process that somehow the person conducting the interview will be impressed by your bravado and your abilities to think on the spot and under pressure think again. You will impress no one and you will have no job interview prospects to which you are offered employment terms. Think again

Full and Thorough Preparation for Job Interviews
Friday, January 11th, 2008
Perhaps by this point you have still not come up with the realization that preparation in life is most things is not “everything”. So is life. It is pointless to wail and draw attention to yourself thinking that this is a wonderful effective strategy for you to follow your life by.
The story is told of one man - . This fellow had everything handed to him - a good union , high paying job. Career , if not highly paid and protected employment in that union job. A house that he owned etc etc etc. And yet this person saw that the world was out to get him. His refrain was one of constant……xxx they screwed me , they f… me. This person antagonized everyone at work - on a more than constant basis- management , fellow workers ( until they could take it no more) , and even his protector at work - the union and its union management and higher ups.
Unbelievably this refrain , and constant bickering and complaining went on for this employees full term of employment - which was over 30 years. You would think that if you do not like the food , or in this case the pay and employment , get up and leave. Get another job , employment or perhaps have your self committed by a medical specialist as a patient inflicted with the mental health condition of constant and ongoing mental and psychological depression of long duration.
What is more than amazing is that the employer put up with this situation for more than 30 years. You would think that management would of come to the conclusion that this was more than an impediment to staff morale as well as productivity and at the worst transferred the employee to a position in Botswana.
In the end management did come to the conclusion that at the least this definitely not a good think for the workplace . At the least this could be considered some form of mental illness. The employee was put on a workplace stress leave of disability , hoping that the employee was smart and intelligent enough , and with enough documented cause , to drag out the disability period another year or two - which would then be the company and union requirement for retirement with full pension. After the company retirement , the former employee , was free to seek other additional employment , if they wished to supplement their income. In this case the employee ( or former employee’s) financial situation was in a perilous state , due to financial mismanagement and extremely poor sense of priorities as well as intense poor sense of financial purchase and allocations standards and priorities.
It all made perfect sense from a management and even employment union viewpoint that the employee be placed on long term disability status . Let the process take its course. There was only one sane way of the situation progressing . Let nature take its course. From a company and union standpoint a proper decision had been made in this case. The workplace had been relieved of a major burden. The union as well had one lost cause , a gigantic waste of time of its hands.
Sadly it was not to be.

Questions in an interview are similar to to questions on an examination. These questions during an interview are never too hard when you have prepared your material well in advance. Some people , and job seekers , as well as even some so called management types and wannabees . You cannot fly by the seat of your pants in an interview or in life in general.
You may think that there is somewhat exciting about such styles - its is exciting to fly into anything unprepared.
Much ado about nothing. Hell and intense fury. In the end you will have no success in the job interview process , and no “new job” or even old job.
Such styles of life or management will not fool anyone - perhaps foolish low lifes and similar types , who will never get anywhere in life , but the people of success and integrity , whose firms and employment yield the most pay , honor as well as career and employment opportunities , as well as general movement ahead in life and its various struggles and traps.
All of the attention that you think you receive in the interview process will be as the novelist William Faulkner described “Full of Sound and Fury Signifying Nothing”.
