Strategies to Help Employ in Dealing with Employment and Skill Weaknesses
Monday, November 17th, 2008
Thus covered are some of the main as well as major strategies that can be employed by a job seeker or employment seekers that can be employed or “used” to help you field questions and survive potential damage that may reduce your chances of successful employment or even derail your chances of being awarded employment or even an interview at all. It is often said that by interview screeners that there are two job piles and no shortage whatsoever for candidates for “good jobs”. Pile one is those of interest - everyone else and any “troublemakers” or any spot on their characters or history , even as small as shoplifting , are immediately and even automatically placed in pile number 2 which is nothing more than the garbage or even unceremoniously a trash can.
Everything in life is sales, marketing and communication so to speak. If the whole approach is done in an honest and sincere approach to gain employment and be a productive member of the company , firm or organization’s team this is not misrepresentation or even lying - it is putting the best food forward and in the process even demonstrating your skills, thoroughness , preparation and determination. All very positive traits that not only hard to come by for employers in people they hire but also rather rare.

Monday, November 17th, 2008
When formulating your response and responses to interviews and interviewer’s questions some general guidelines and even rules to abide by are in order:
1) Choose shortcomings that are not severe or at least too severe in outcome and outcomes and that will prove least damaging to your potential candidacy as an employment or even interview process candidate
2) Pick those weaknesses that are the least-related to performance of key areas of your job or chosen area of performance . For example if you wish employment as an installation tech person it is best not to point out previous experiences as a b & e artist
3) Select areas where you have already demonstrated improvement, demonstrating your abject willingness as well as motivation and motivations to improve
4) Pick weaknesses , that if viewed differently may also be seen as good and even major strengths ( for example being too detailed could also be seen as being thorough and accurate - a very good trait for a computer repair person diagnostician or air traffic controller). Similarly stubbornness could be seen as stick to it ness or persistence good in many traits.
5) Avoid stating your weaknesses in “absolute” and rigid terms- although it is always a wise idea and even best to leave some doubt that by showing others may perceive it differently ( even as an asset or strength_ It is a management failing of many that they come with a basis of all or nothing approach to work and management - “I am the boss” and that you have to keep the troops down lest you be seen as weak. After all it is pathologically reasoned - everyone is after my job.
Lastly if possible , qualify the weakness in context of your overall performance that is state that although an area for improvement of slated for improvements has not had a significant impact on overall job performance measures.
Job Seekers : Think Outside the Box
Monday, November 10th, 2008
Many job posting sites , listings and even newspaper or craig’s list ads and postings are readily visible on the internet - as most current job seekers know well. The amazing part is that some still cling only to new technology and technologies . Its as if the Winnipeg Sun, Winnipeg Free Press and the Globe and Mail are their only sources whatsoever. There are nothing wrong with using these sources as a source of leads. They serve as a good starting point for your job search and searches. However to use these sources as your only source an list of jobs is to severly limit yourself in options and results. As Shaun Stephens use to note “step out of the box”. The only problem is that Shaun had no idea whatsoever what this meant and as well how the term was originated.
The term “step” or “think out of the box” came from a parlor game that was played by a management consultant team in the 1960’s. A puzzle on paper was presented to management types at various major corporations ( who the consultants were trying to woo or some say con). The puzzle was to be solved on paper. At some point in time the victim would admit he could not complete the full task. The consultant would point out that all that had to be done was to join the dots outside the boxed delineated area. This was “outside the box” . The victim had mistakenly assumed the rules that he could only the points in the boxed in area. Thus to solve the puzzle one had to “think outside of the box”. It could be looked at as a matter of simple things for simple minds. Or a simple parlor game .
The moral of the story is that you have to think “outside the box” and use other sources - not only the older , well known sources that were used previously like newspaper ads only. To do so is to limit yourself in your job employment as well as ulitmate career searches.
Your Job Search - Knowing Where to Poke Around
Monday, November 10th, 2008
It used to be the vast majority of help-wanted ads it seems are published in the classified sections of large circulation newspapers - particularly on the larger Sunday editions of those newspapers. It seemed that most people read want ads when they had time on the weekend. But if you think about it would people off of work employers be reading at home “on their own time” business materials.
Currently most ads are placed online on employment boards , services and the like. Its easy to publish. Advanced features and ad enhancements are the norm . Most people have access now to the internet. There is no cost to them to read these ads and they can be read at any time without costs. Not enough the costs of gas to travel to the neighborhood convenience store to purchase the paper.
The key is to always be on the prowl . Check sources , recheck and go back and check yet again.
The early bird gets the worm . Who knows with the likes of computers and computer publishing when that job you are looking for pops out of the employment ad que of the posting system or systems.
In addition to the regular sites there are other avenue in which job postings may be and jobs and employment career fields be researched. These are company websites , a fuller range of online career sites than your normally go to. Step out of the majors. Look for niche job posting boards. They may be geographic in nature. They may be trade or industry related. For example for a job posting for a prison guard you might look at the Correctional Service of Canada. If its a government job you might look after various governernment job posting sites.
